Upload a file or select one from the library

Open the shared file picker from an editor block or a settings field, upload a file directly from your computer, or select an existing one from your organization's file library.

Wherever FrontCore lets you attach an image, video, audio file, or document — an editor block, a course cover, an organization logo, a course attachment — it opens the same file picker. This article covers that picker itself: opening it, uploading directly, selecting an existing file, and replacing a selection.

You'll run into this picker when:

This picker is a different mode of the same panel covered in Browse the organization file library — that article covers searching, filtering, sorting, and file details in depth. This one focuses on picking or uploading a file for one specific spot.

Open the file selector

The picker shows up in two shapes, depending on where you open it:

  • In an editor block. An empty Image, Video, Audio, or Attachment block in the section editor shows a placeholder reading "Drag image here or" (or video/audio/attachment) with a Select from Media Library button and an Upload icon button next to it. Video blocks add a third icon to embed a YouTube or Vimeo link instead. See Add content to a section with the editor for a screenshot of this placeholder.
  • In a setting. A field like a course cover or organization logo shows an empty dropzone reading "Choose an existing file or upload a new one", with the same Select from Media Library button and an Upload icon button (tooltip "Upload image") beside it.

Both shapes open the exact same picker — only the surrounding field changes. When it opens for a single spot like this, its title reads "Select Media", not "Media Library" — that's how you can tell you're picking a file for one place rather than browsing the library generally.

Upload a file directly

Click the Upload icon button on the block or field itself and choose a file from your device. This is the one-step route: the file is uploaded and selected for the spot you started from. (Once the picker is open it has an Upload button of its own, in its toolbar — that one only uploads, leaving you to pick the file yourself; it's covered under "Select an existing file from the library" below.)

  • For an image, this opens a "Resize and crop your image" dialog first. The crop ratio depends on where you're uploading — a course cover crops to 16:9, an organization logo to 1:1. Position the crop and click Confirm.

  • For every other kind — video, audio, document, archive — the file uploads as soon as you pick it, no crop step.

Either way — with or without the crop step — the file lands in your organization's file library and is selected for the spot you started from, without the picker ever opening.

How big can a file be? The limit depends on the file's kind:

File kindMax size
Image100 MB
Video5 GB
Audio1 GB
Document500 MB
Archive2 GB
Other500 MB

If you upload a file whose exact contents already exist somewhere in your organization's library, it's reused instead of stored twice — no extra space used. Large images (over 2 MB) are also automatically compressed in your browser before upload, up to a point; GIFs and SVGs are left as-is.

Select an existing file from the library

Click Select from Media Library to open the picker in browse mode instead of uploading. It's already narrowed to files of the kind you're picking — for example, only images when you're setting a course cover.

Search, filter, and browse folders exactly as described in Browse the organization file library. Click any file's card to select it — the picker closes and the field updates immediately.

You can also upload a new file from inside this open picker, using its own Upload button in the toolbar (the same control covered in the Browse article). This one is not a shortcut for the whole job: it uploads the file and brings it to the front of the grid, and stops there. The picker stays open, and the field or block you opened it from is unchanged — still empty if it was empty, still showing the previous file if you were replacing one. Finish the job the way you'd pick any other file: one click on the new card, and the picker closes and the field updates.

So the two Upload buttons do different amounts of work: the one on the block or field uploads and selects in a single step, while the one inside the open picker only uploads — waiting longer won't make it select the file for you. If you want the one-step version, close the picker and use the field's own Upload button instead.

Replace a selected file

Once a field has a file selected, hover over it to bring back the same two controls, plus a third:

  • The folder icon reopens the picker to choose a different existing file, the same as above.
  • The upload icon, tooltipped "Upload new image", uploads a new file from your device and swaps it in — the same crop step applies for images.
  • The trash icon clears the selection back to empty.

The folder and upload icons swap in a new file immediately — nothing extra to undo first.

Replacing a course cover or organization logo this way only updates the form you're in — it isn't saved until you click Save on that settings drawer.

Section-editor blocks work differently: once an Image, Video, or Audio block has a file linked, there's no in-place replace control. Open the block's drag handle menu and choose Delete, then add a new block from the file selector to swap the media.
